Your Christmas tree has seen better days. Your sweet tooth has been satisfied. And it seems there is no end to the January rain showers. But instead of dwelling on the post-holiday doldrums, the CK crew would like to offer up 24 of our favorite tips to beat the winter blues and help you kick-start 2019!
- Clear the clutter. I like to declutter and organize closets and cabinets I’ve hidden messes in all year. – Meghan
- Soak and sauna! Nothing takes the chill off like warming up in a hot tub or sauna at a local spa like Common Ground Wellness. – Kellie
- Opt outside. I enjoy outdoor trips with my dogs. They don’t care what the weather is like, they’re just happy to get out of the house. – Alex
- Set goals. Make a list of my goals for the year. – Jacqueline
- Get out of town. I’m heading to the red desert of Las Vegas for a weekend of Cirque shows, gourmet food and flashing slots! It’s important to always have something to look forward to, no matter what time of year. – Lance
- Shake it off. In January, it’s still too dark to take an evening walk with my school-age daughters. To prevent cabin fever, we have a post-dinner dance party instead. We pull up Spotify and take turns picking songs until we all collapse in a sweaty heap or until I’ve heard all the Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainor and Marshmello that I can stand (my current record is 26 minutes). – Shelby
- Create a mantra. Pick one word as your resolution, as opposed to a long list of things to do. Instead of feeling like you are behind, or have a long list of to-dos, you have just one word to apply to all the different areas of your life. Easy to remember/carry throughout the whole year. – Caroline
- Take a class. I just signed up for a 10-week OSU Film Noir course, which should bring some cheer to the coming weeks. – Erin
- Create healthy routines. I plan on going to the gym and cooking more dinners at home. – Madeline
- Follow the sun. Get out of town to a warm weather location. This year’s destination: Southeast Asia. – Jeanie
- Hone your craft. I try not to look at the new year as a “fresh start.” For me, that means learning or trying a new photo, video, editing technique every day. Find something you’re good at and become obsessed with it! – Tim
- Be open minded. Try to say “yes” more – it does wonders to your life. – Anri
- Enjoy some down time. I head up to the mountain and spend the day shredding pow-pow. Okay, just kidding, I’m not that cool. I daydream about doing that while actually watching The Golden Girls. I mostly don’t regret this choice. – Kevin
- Don’t avoid it. Embrace it. I actually like this time of the year. The feeling to “deal with it,” is not there for me. This is the time of the year that I feel makes Portland, Portland. The gray, the rain and the cold that you just can’t shake. It’s always been this way for me and I look forward to it. – Tony
- Turn clothes into cash. I like to start January with a fresh palette. For me, that means cleaning and purging items I no longer need or love. Going through your space and slowly creating piles of “sellable,” “givable” and “tossable” make it easy to do small bits as you have time and remove clutter from your new year, and your new you. – Bri
- Escape in a good book. Forget what’s going on in the world outside. Instead, get lost in a different time, a different place, a different world, without leaving your couch. – Christina
- Get cooking. Make more soups and stews! Ideally using as many super foods as possible – think of the “warming” ingredients such as cinnamon, ginger and turmeric. And add in dark leafy greens, beans, lentils, quinoa, sweet potatoes, carrots, nuts and seeds. You’ll be feeling “sunnier” in no time. – Sue
- Get cooking – part deux. One of the things I like to do coming out of the holidays is “Soup Sunday!” I love the way soup smells cooking long and slow on a Sunday afternoon and it always tastes good after you’ve been outside for a while. Also, I’m not much of a chef and I’ve found that soup is harder for me to screw up. – Mike
- Embrace the rain! Sing in it, dance in it or just get weird in it. Or just cry it out while you wait for the summer months like I do. – James
- Namaste. Getting sleep and going to yoga! – Maureen
- Book a trip. Plan a vacation to someplace fun, relaxing or surprising, or all of the above. – Lindsay
- Go to the snow. Rather than fret about the weather, make a quick jaunt to its brighter side. Snow works like sunshine, and it’s just a short drive away. – Steve
- Diet reset. After all of the holiday celebrations, I’m recommitting to the Whole30 and avoiding alcohol. – Chapin
- Out with the old. It’s time to clear out the closet of all the things that you didn’t touch last year. – Sierra
